The Dangers of Lithium-Ion Batteries

In light of the many reported cases of fires and property damage attributed to Lithium (Li-ion) batteries throughout 2023, we have prepared a simple list of proactive measures to assist your Xenia Mutual Members in reducing the potential risks associated with Li-ion battery-related incidents.
There have been over 180 Li-ion battery-related events in New South Wales, 120 events in Victoria, and 81 in Western Australia.
This highlights the urgency and importance of implementing preventative measures and we encourage you to share this email with your teams to engage in this important conversation.
Li-ion batteries are a part of our everyday lives. They are used in mobile phones, fitness watches, tablets, laptops, power tools, forklifts, e-cigarettes, e-scooters, e-bikes, and even electric vehicles.
The main cause of the fires and damage to properties has been due to ‘thermal run away’. The root causes include:
- Damaged Li-ion battery cells – dropped, cracked casings, bulging cases
- Overheated batteries due to incorrect charging / prolonged charging
- Charging batteries in unventilated locations
- Damaged Electric vehicle charging stations
- Incorrect disposal of Li-ion batteries (e.g. e-cigarettes) in general waste bins
- Poorly made imports
Li-ion battery-related fires are difficult to deal with as they release flammable and toxic vapour.
So, what does this mean for our Members?
Xenia Mutual Members should ensure that any charging stations, storage, and disposal of Li-ion batteries are reviewed as part of the regular operational inspections and reviews.
We ask that you forward this list to the relevant employees and stakeholders within your business.
Xenia can assist members in understanding their risks, identifying their vulnerabilities, and developing contingency plans. If you require any additional information, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Xenia team at info@xeniamutual.com.
